The Future of work

The Future of work

What challenges and opportunities for Morocco?

The world of work is undergoing a profound transformation. Between technological advances, economic shifts, and new business expectations, the jobs of today will not be those of tomorrow.
The World Economic Forum’s 2025 report on the future of jobs sheds light on these global changes and their impacts. But what about Morocco? Between opportunities to seize and challenges to overcome, where does our job market truly stand?

1. A work revolution already underway

The numbers speak for themselves: in recent years and by 2025, 85 million jobs will disappear due to automation, but 97 million new jobs will emerge, according to the World Economic Forum. A positive balance, yes—but not without consequences.

What’s changing?

  • The rise of artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, big data, and renewable energy.
  • The decline of jobs based on repetitive, manual tasks, gradually being replaced by machines.
  • Increasing demand for advanced skills: data analysis, complex systems management, robot maintenance, etc.

A geopolitical and economic impact

  • Global tensions and the reconfiguration of supply chains are influencing job creation.
  • The green economy is becoming a key job driver, with booming opportunities in
renewables, the circular economy, and natural resource management.

Faced with these global shifts, how can Morocco adapt?

2. Morocco and a changing labor market

While the country shows sustained economic growth, the job market struggles to keep pace.

Concerning numbers:

  • A 13.6% unemployment rate (HCP, 2024), rising to 25% among young graduates
  • A misalignment between training programs and business needs.
  • A misalignment between training programs and business needs.

Sectors hiring:

  • Industry & services : traditional pillars undergoing transformation.
  • Information technologies & digitalization : strong potential, but a lack of qualified talent.
  • Renewable energy : a strategic and expanding sector.

The Moroccan government has launched several initiatives to address these issues (National Employment Strategy, Green Morocco Plan…), but results remain mixed. The key challenge?
Aligning training with market demands.

3. Training tomorrow’s talent: The challenge of adaptation

A clear reality: 50% of workers will need to reskill by 2025 to remain employable. But are we ready?

Current gaps:

  • Academic training remains too theoretical and disconnected from real-world needs.
  • A shortage of specialized programs in AI, cybersecurity, and renewable energy.
  • Few retraining initiatives for workers impacted by automation.

Potential solutions:

  • Promote hybrid training (academic +practical).
  • Invest in continuous learning to support career transitions.
  •  Strengthen partnerships between universities, businesses, and startups.

4. Can Morocco stand out?

Morocco has undeniable assets to position itself in future-facing sectors:

  • Renewable energy: with flagship projects like the Ouarzazate solar complex, the
country is ahead of the curve.
  • Digital & Tech: Morocco aims to become a tech hub in Africa, and local startup
    investments are growing.
  • Reskilling & training: well-designed retraining programs could turn today’s challenges into tomorrow’s opportunities.

Conclusion: A Transition to anticipate, not endure

The future of work is uncertain—but full of opportunities. To rise to the occasion, Morocco must accelerate training, boost innovation, and support workers in adapting to new market demands.
Rather than a threat, this transformation can become a growth driver and help position
Morocco as a key player in the future job market.
